The first time I was introduced to naan pizza, was at a little cafe in Kobe, Japan. I remember being a bit skeptical when I saw curry chicken naan pizza on the menu, but decided to be adventurous and give it a try. I quickly realized that I was totally overanalyzing things, since naan bread is pretty similar to pre-made pizza crust. My naan bread pizza was delicious, and I quickly started making my own at home.
There is something about shrimp on pizza that just sounds amazing in my opinion. Add an asian spin to it, and that’s just downright heavenly.
I recently purchased some tandoori naan from my local grocery store, with the intention of making naan pizzas. I wasn’t sure what type of pizzas I wanted to make, but I knew I wanted to make something different.
In my refrigerator was a pound of thawed shrimp , I intended to use for a shrimp chowder. I started to ponder how delicious shrimp on a naan pizza would taste, and quickly nixed my shrimp chowder idea. I was about to make shrimp naan pizza with an asian twist.
I knew I wanted my pizza to be sweet and spicy, with a distinct asian inspired taste. So I started whipping up my sauce, in hopes of creating something delicious. I had to make some tweaks, in order to get the flavors to my liking. But when I was done, I had to pat myself on the back, because my creation was AMAZING!!
Spicy Asian Shrimp Naan Pizza
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp water
1 1/2 cups shrimp (cut into large chunks)
1/4 cup thinly sliced red onions
4 large cloves freshly minced garlic
1-2 thai chili peppers thinly sliced
1/2 tbsp fish sauce
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
2 Tandoori naan breads
Preheat oven to 500 degrees.
In a large sauté pan, combine the sugar and water and place on medium heat. Once water starts to boil and bubble, gently stir until mix becomes a caramel brown color. Next add shrimp, red onions, garlic, chili, and fish sauce to pan. Stir and cook shrimp until thoroughly cooked. Make sure not to overcook shrimp, or it will become rubbery. Season with salt/pepper if desired. Remove the pan from the heat and let sit for a few minutes. Place the naan breads onto a baking sheet. Sprinkle mozzarella and parmesan cheese on top of both naan breads (making sure to reserve some mozzarella for after pizza is done baking). Next add shrimp mix, and bake until naan breads are a golden brown. Remove from oven and sprinkle more mozzarella cheese on top. Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro before serving.
And if by chance you have leftovers, pack for lunch the next day in your Easylunchbox.
